Super-Sized Furniture: Measure Before You Buy

The problem with giant furniture stores with 400,000 square feet of inventory is they dont really give you much of an idea of scale. A furniture set that looks perfect in a giant warehouse may not be the right size when you get it home.
As always, I like to provide a little personal experience to illustrate interior design misses. I have a lot of them.
It was about five years ago when my wife and I decided to get rid of the furniture that we had been collecting through the years via garage sales and trips to the Salvation Army.
When we decided to buy new furniture we didnt think about actually measuring the living room at all. It was actually a spur of the moment decision and we simply got dressed and went out the door. We went to a big-box store and spent hours looking at furniture set after furniture set. The place even had a little cafeteria. How quaint. Now, if a store is so big that you need to literally stop shopping to feed yourself, go someplace else.
Finally, after much deliberation we chose a living room set that fit our decor perfectly and had it set to be delivered the next day. We were excited, to say the least, and spent most of the next morning cleaning and clearing out the old furniture in preparation for the new stuff.
When the truck pulled up, my heart started thumping with excitement. The movers got out the first piece and I should have known something was up when they had trouble fitting it through the door. They set it down and it looked more than a little big but, no big deal, there was still plenty of room.
One by one, they took each piece out: the sofa, the loveseat, lamps, end tables, etc. When it was all said and done, the living room was cramped. And were not talking about too-close-in-a restaurant-cramped, this was a full-on 15 red-nosed-clowns-in-a-Volkswagon-Beetle-cramped.
The day was saved by taking some of the furniture and tables out of the living room and placing them in other rooms of the house. All of this trouble could have been saved if we had just taken dimensions of the room prior to shopping, and then made a decision based on the dimensions. I now know that when it comes to interior design, its more than just matching colors and centerpieces.
Moral of the story: When it comes to decorating your rooms and choosing furniture, size does matter.
